Readers are more willing to learn from your experiences than they are to learn from you witnessing someone else’s experiences. Don’t go overboard, but show your readers a bit of yourself. Be sure that your words capture the emotions you felt while you were witnessing the event. Did you feel sad? Angry? Excited? Chances are you felt that way because you put yourself in the place of the participants. Let your readers do that, too. Narrative Essay Tips If you’ve decided to include a narrative essay on your portfolio or to submit one for publication, these tips should help you. But there are a few other things to remember in order to make your essay a sure sell. First of all, be concise. It bears repeating. You’re not writing a novella, you’re writing an essay. It’s with that in mind that you should choose the right story. If your narrative needs a lot of information about things which happened two decades ago, it’s probably not a good bet. Politics and Society Media, money, and the First Amendment are three key influences in a successful political run. Media coverage is important to familiarize the public with the candidate and to show where he stands on certain issues. Money is needed to buy television and radio time. The First Amendment guarantees everyone the freedom of speech, but how can this be reasonably defined. One possible solution would be restrictions on the amount of money that individuals can donate to support their candidates. Modern media has influenced and possibly altered the history of politics. As stated by Washington Post reporter Dan Morgan, "The most valuable commodity in American politics today is advertising time on TV." The problem with this statement is that only the people with money have access to this option. Republican campaign chairman, Mark Hanna, was quoted saying, "There are two things that are important in politics. The first is money and I can't remember what the second is." In support of this quote, millions of dollars are spent on political campaigns in one week. One example of this problem is demonstrated by Ralph Nader, the candidate for the Green Party, who is not as well-known as George W. Bush or Al Gore. His popularity has lagged because he does not have the funds to buy as much television time as the other, more funded, candidates. When Nader, ran for Presidency in 1996, he only spent $5,000 of his own money and received only one percent of the votes. Also, on October 3, 2000, he was denied access into the third and final debate at Washington University, and as a result, he filed a lawsuit against the Commission of Presidential Debates. Even though all the necessary passes were presented, the CPD security still would not let him enter onto the Washington University campus, where he had a previously scheduled interview with the campus television station. In contrast, when multimillionaire Ross Perot ran for presidency as a third party in 1992, he received almost a fifth of the votes because he could communicate with the public through p aid media and debates. Unlike Ralph Nader however, Ross Perot was leading the race up until July, when he dropped out of the race because of negative media that his family was receiving. When he reentered in October he spent over $37 million of his own money for campaign ads and infomercials in the final month of campaign. Perot was allowed to participate in the presidential debates, a privilege that Nader was denied. The appearance of a candidate on public television is very important. If a person is able to identify the face of a politician and what he has said in campaigns, then that candidate has a better chance of winning. The physical appearance of a candidate can be a decisive subject in an election. During the election of 1960, Richard M. Nixon and John F. Kennedy were contrasted as two completely different people. Nixon was depicted as "Nixon-of-the-five-o'clock-shadow" and Kennedy was described as "handsome and youthful." The result: a new youthful president. Also, in 1984, Ronald Reagan appeared to be in a confused state of mind during a debate and the thoughts of old age affecting the candidate's ability to fully function as President seeped into the minds of many people. During the second debate, asked if he would be able to fully function in a foreign policy crisis, he responded by saying, "I will not make age an issue in this campaign. I am not going to exploit, for political purpos es, my opponent's youth and inexperience." This one statement allowed the candidate to survive the talk of the media about his age. Media is the only way most of the population of the United States finds out what happens in politics. Television is unique in the sense that it is "free" media because of the Communications Act of 1934, which was created to serve "the public interest, convenience and necessity." The reader is shown how Jim grows up, through this transformation, and by the end of the novel it is clear that Jim has changed by the way his personality and approach to life has altered. As a young child, Jim has seen some of the devastating results of the war, but seems to be detached from them. One of the first examples that show how lucky he is, is when he asks Vera where her parents lived. When she replies, ‘They live in one room, James’, Jim found this inconceivable, demonstrating how spoilt he is. Completely absorbed in his own privileged world, he spends his days riding his bicycle around the city, dreaming of being a fighter pilot like the Japanese pilots he sees flying overhead. After he thought he had provoked the Japanese attack, by shining the torch out of the window to the Japanese ships, it is illustrated how ignorant Jim is when the author tells us that, ‘He decided not to tell his mother that he had started the war. ‘ On pages 64 – 65 we are invited to infer that Jamie is still a child as we are told his reaction to the talcum powder on the floor. Jim thinks that his mother has been dancing a tango, which we know to have been a struggle; by the way we are told that it â€Å"seemed far more violent than any tango he had ever seen. † He is also portrayed as childish by the way he rides his bike around the house on page 67. The quote, ‘they seemed much younger than Jim, but in fact both were more than a year older,’ from the beginning of chapter 15, signifies that in the short time between leaving Shanghai, and arriving at the detention centre, Jim has already begun growing up. The words, ‘how much he had changed,’ on page 153, also demonstrate that Jim himself was beginning to recognise that he was growing up. By the end of chapter 20, Jim ‘could no longer remember what his parents looked like. ‘ At this point, we can see that Jim’s experience has definitely made him older and further away from his parents, so much, it seems, that he cannot remember what they looked like. Quotes like, ‘a more adult eye’, ‘no longer cared’, ‘unexpected erection’ and ‘Kimura†¦ had once been a child as he himself had been before the war’ give the impression that Jim is graduating from ‘The University of Life’ – or he is growing up from his experience. According to Ballard, Jim’s ‘first adult act’ was when he pushed his suitcase into the river. He later regrets this, as he could have sold the contents, but still, it was his first adult act – the turning point in his life from childhood to a mature adolescent. As the book draws to a conclusion, it becomes clear that Jim has grown up. When he is reunited with his parents he realises that ‘his mother and father had been through a different war,’ showing that he was grown up and less dependant on his parents. He is also older and wiser, and realises how patient China have been, and he thinks that ‘One day China would punish the rest of the world, and take a frightening revenge. ‘ By the end of the book we have a full picture of Jim’s difficult childhood. We can see that he has changed from the spoilt child, who goes to fancy dress parties in the middle of a war, and who can’t possibly believe that someone could live in a room the size of his dressing room, to a young adult who has graduated from the ‘University of Life’, and who now realised that China would one day take a huge revenge. This change shows the reader that although thought of as a war novel, ‘Empire of the Sun’ is actually a Rites of Passage novel, and the war is just the time and place in which the story is set. There has always been hostility between different groups of people, in the 17th-19th centuries this was no different. This was the time of slavery in the New World. During this time people from Africa were enslaved and brought to the colonies of North America. They were then forced to work under harsh conditions. Although this is a painful memory in our country s past, without it we wouldn t be the country we are today. America is an advanced country with a great government, however during our history there have always been down sides. The biggest problem is that the only way it would work is if the Union won the Civil War.(www.archives.gov) However, with all of of its faults the proclamation did change the outlook of this civil war. Because of the Emancipation Proclamation the Union started to accept more blacks troops, and because of this the slaves that had become free were now freeing slaves themselves. Many others helped to free the African Americans from their terrible lives as slaves as well. They are the reason that minorities have freedom i n this country. Some of these people that fought for black rights came after the 1900 s, they include Malcolm X, Martin Luther King jr, Rosa Parks and others. They all fought for black rights after slavery was abolished, and made a stand to insure that blacks were treated fairly. Rosa Parks made her stand on a bus. She refused to give up her seat on a bus to a white passenger, because she thought that just because she is black doesn t mean she should be any less eligible for a seat on a bus. This one act of disobedience sparked one of the largest movements against racial discrimination, the Montgomery Bus Boycott. Malcolm X was another big factor in the fight for black rights .
